Jennifer Herber, managing director with Stephens Inc., noted
that public finance sources are opening up to retailers. However,
for smaller and mid-sized retailers that lack the assets or cash
flow to attract lenders, it is still a dry market. Private equity
firms are viable alternatives, as many are willing to make minority
investments in retailers that are looking for capital to expand or
restructure operations, pay down debt with burdensome covenants,
enter new markets or finance a major acquisition without a change
of control of the business.
