Policy Note
Donald Trump won a resounding victory in the presidential election last night, securing electoral and popular vote majorities (which Republicans have not achieved since 2004) by a wide margin. It is a mandate, beyond any doubt. Mr. Trump’s victory erases any worries about civil unrest or protracted legal challenges. That stability is part of the reason why markets are surging today.
Policy Note
One of the more pernicious errors in policy analysis is to contemplate only one outcome. So it is with today’s Iranian missile strikes on Israel, the second such barrage this year. The received wisdom predicts an Israeli counterstrike that will plunge the region into an inevitable war, with terrible human, economic and strategic consequences.
Policy Note
Democratic delegates gathered in Chicago this week to launch the Harris-Walz presidential campaign and further define their policy agenda. The official speeches were largely gauzy and peppered with catchphrases like “do something!” and “hope is making a comeback!” The official platform however was far more definitive about the party’s tax-and-spend ambitions.
Policy Note
The race for the White House to date has centered more on the candidates’ personalities than on policy proposals and dueling ideas. The good news for Americans is that this dynamic is now changing, as both campaigns outline their economic programs. The bad news is the content of said programs, which often preference vote buying via government handouts over pro-growth policy.
