Advocacy & Impact
When John Stephens steps into a boxing ring, he carries Arkansas with him — literally. The co-CEO of Stephens earned his nickname "the Arkansas Assassin" during his time in London, where he wanted people to know exactly where he came from. "A lot of people had never met anyone from Arkansas and I wanted to highlight that,” he says.
But boxing means more to Stephens than geography or fitness. What started as a hobby after he became a father has morphed into something that goes beyond the physical elements and embodies who he is as a leader. “The mental toughness you need to do well in boxing translates professionally," he explains. "When you're hit or struggling, you always want to keep your chin up."
That resilience and refusal to quit is something that Stephens sees reflected in his family’s firm culture — and what sparked the idea to organize a Fight Night fundraiser in London last year that other Stephens employees participated in. Having been involved in several boxing events before, he knew what it took to make such an endeavor a success: pair competition with purpose and you create something memorable. "The ethos of making money and giving it away came to fruition that night," he says, referencing a mantra of his grandfather’s that “the two best things about money are making it and giving it away.”
For more than four months, four competitors from Stephens’ London office — Simon Tilley, Chris Mulaik, Rob Eastwood and Ameer Khan — along with Stephens, trained for Fight Night, which consisted of ring matchups, a dinner and an auction in November. The event raised more than £200,000 that was distributed this February to charities that mentor young people, teaching discipline, providing direction and offering an outlet when life gets overwhelming.
One of the biggest benefits of boxing, Stephens says, is how it toughens up a person’s mental game. You don't need natural talent to earn respect in boxing, he notes. "You just have to show up and put the work in. As a firm, we really admire people who do this,” Stephens adds.
That work ethic was on full display during Fight Night. One match particularly stands out: Chris “No Miss” Mulaik’s fight. Though somewhat mismatched against his opponent, Chris stayed in the ring, hands up, defending himself through every round in front of hundreds of people. “It was a great display of mental fortitude,” Stephens says.
The event gave the London office — and the broader Stephens community — something to rally around. “You'd see someone come in late or with a black eye, and you knew they were training hard,” Stephens recalls. “It's hard not to respect that, because it's not like they have to do this.”
Beyond raising money for a good cause, Fight Night brought about something larger than the event itself: a newfound respect for the colleagues, both for those who fought and those who came to support the fighters in London and firm-wide. “I hope our employees feel like they’re contributing to a company that works hard to make our communities a better place,” Stephens says. “I hope it makes them proud.”
