Lost or Forgotten Retirement Accounts? There’s Now a Database for That.

New Tool Helps Reclaim Forgotten Retirement Accounts

Did you know that many Americans forget about their retirement accounts? It’s true and it’s not insignificant, an article in 401kSpecialist magazine states “As of May 2023, there was an estimated 29.2 million forgotten or left-behind 401(k) accounts in the U.S., representing $1.65 trillion in assets.” The article also says the 29 million is a 20% increase in just two years.

Retirement Savings Lost and Found Database from the DOL

As part of the SECURE Act 2.0, the U.S. Department of Labor has launched a valuable new resource for retirement savers: the Retirement Savings Lost and Found Database. This secure, online tool is designed to help individuals locate old or forgotten retirement accounts—such as 401(k)s—that may have been left behind after changing jobs.

Why This Retirement Recovery Tool Matters

With frequent job changes becoming increasingly common, many workers lose track of employer-sponsored retirement accounts. These accounts often remain untouched for years, potentially missing out on growth and complicating retirement planning. The Retirement Savings Lost and Found Database aims to solve this issue by providing a simple way to search for and recover those accounts.

How to Find a Lost Retirement Account in the Database

Accessible at lostandfound.dol.gov the database allows users to search for retirement accounts linked to former employers. To use the tool, you must create a secure login through Login.gov, the federal government’s centralized sign-in service.

To set up an account, you will need:

  • Your full legal name
  • A valid email address
  • A mobile phone number for two-factor authentication
  • Your Social Security Number (to match account records securely)
  • Date of birth

Once logged in, the system will search a national registry of retirement plans and provide contact details for any accounts associated with your employment history.

Exploring the Tool and What You Should Do Next

Even if you're uncertain whether you’ve left an account behind, a quick check can offer peace of mind—and possibly help you recover lost retirement savings. We encourage everyone to visit the tool, especially those who have changed jobs over the years.

If you identify a forgotten account or need help consolidating your retirement assets, please contact our team to discuss your options and ensure alignment with your overall financial strategy.
